Beechwood Dental in Bournemouth educate patients about sugar

How much hidden sugar is in our food

It seems that, each day, many of us are eating too much hidden sugar

You may be surprised to discover the amount of hidden sugar you are eating. This added hidden sugar that many of us consume can build up during the day.

The government are now advising that parents act by installing a new app onto their smart phone. This app can read the barcodes on many food products and gives a visual representation of the amount of hidden sugar a product contains.

The “sugar smart app”, from Public Health England (PHE), functions by checking bar code scans. It then reveals the total hidden sugar content of the food in either cubes or grams.

Authorities hope it can help combat tooth cavities, weight problems and type 2 diabetes and encourage families to select more healthy options with their daily diet.

Hidden Sugar

Did you Know?

Approximately 46,500 children and young people under 19 were admitted to hospital for a primary diagnosis of dental caries in 2013–14. This is according to The state of children’s oral health in England report by the Faculty of Dental Surgery . That’s more children than were admitted for tonsillitis.

As a nation, if we need to dental disease under control and thus  reduce these hospital admissions for young people. This means you need to be more aware of the hidden sugar in your food.

Beechwood Dental, Bournemouth Xmas Children’s Days

Lots of fun was had by all. The staff dressed up in Xmas costumes which all 25 children loved. Lots of oral education was given by our nurses to both children and parents. Including tooth brushing modelling and displays and advice on reducing sugar in their diet.

This display has been kept in our waiting room so all our other patients can find out more about the sugar content of many  foods. Knowing what we might eat and drink can help reduce our sugar intake.
